Page 6 Obsessions and Compulsions Suffering from obsessions and compulsions is a serious issue. Fortunately,
effective and professional advice is available and helps you out. Are you suffering from inadequate thoughts that make you feel strange? Do you worry that these obsessive thoughts could make you do something you will regret, like harming yourself or others, for example? Or are showing a compulsive behaviour, which is not “normal” in certain situations, but you cannot avoid not behaving like this? Are you, for example, washing your hands all the time or checking the stove every 5 minutes? Or maybe controlling your partner all the time? Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours are different symptoms of the OCD (Obsessive-compulsive-Disorder). The presence of a mild form of this mental disorder is relatively common, however, a need for action is often only detected when the life and interaction with others are severely affected. Although the person is conscious of the absurdity of these thoughts or actions, he/she is not able to control them. What causes OCD? As typical for psychological problems, a unilateral reason is not possible. A normal habit can be turned into an unwanted obsession by more and more exaggerated ritualisation, especially in perfectionist inclined people. On the other hand, a very strong impression of a traumatic experience can also generate an OCD condition. This occurs especially during the sensitive stage of development (eg in childhood) and/or in situations with special intensity. Anyway, recognising the problem is the first step to find a sustainable and effective treatment. And it does exist. Help is available! As with most mental health problems, the cognitive-behavioural treatment has proven to be especially effective with the obsessive-compulsive disorder. Here usually neutralising behaviours will be uncovered and prevented in the future with approaching the problematic situations systematically. This often is not an easy process, but with appropriate guidance and advice it leads to lasting improvement. If you recognise yourself or a friend relate to the described symptoms, you may like to arrange a no compromise initial consultation with me. I´ll explain in your language the specific treatment procedure in order to regain your quality of life! Mirko Bruns, Graduated Psychologist. Centro Internacional de Atención Psicológica.
