Forthcoming Events

By Keith Nicol

It’s been a hot July and August and with the slightly cooler September and Autumn weather on the way, more events will quickly follow. One disappointing note is that for the first time in over a decade, Torrevieja Town Hall does not have a published Cultural Programme. The new Government has also closed the Municipal Ticket Office and so those wishing to buy tickets need to try and discover where the tickets are on sale, or keep their fingers crossed they are available at the door on the night.

By far the biggest sporting event on the Costa Blanca happens on Sunday August 30th with the running of the ninth stage of La Vuelta, the Tour of Spain. This year is very special for a number of reasons, primarily because it starts in Torrevieja and makes its way past Benidorm and up the coast to Cumbre del Sol plus the huge attraction of this year’s Tour de France winner Chris Froome taking part as a member of the SKY Cycling Team. Stage 9 leaves from Torrevieja’s seafront, close to the Statue of the Old Fisherman, the Hombre del Mar, with a yet to be confirmed start time of 1.18pm. The race follows a route of 168.3 kilometres of mostly rolling roads finishing in Cumbre del Sol.

A smaller sports event, but no less important also happens on Sunday 30th when local football returns to the Vicente Garcia Stadium as CD Torrevieja kick off with their first home game at 7pm. Season tickets are priced at 100€ and 125€, general admission is 10€, those 16 to 21 are 5€ and those 15 and under can watch the games for free. Enjoy and cheer on CD to promotion this season.

This year the XIII International Festival of Bands, starts on Wednesday 26th: Sociedad Musical “Ciudad de Torrevieja-Los Salerosos”, followed on Thursday, 27th with the Northern Ireland Concert Band, on Friday 28th: Concert Band Loureiro from Portugal and finishing with a big concert featuring all of the bands on Saturday 29th.

This week Los Alcazares continue their 44th International Fiesta of the Countryside and Sea through to 29th August 2015. This fiesta has been declared as being of Regional Tourist Interest. It features many different aspects of country life and that of the sea, including carriage rides, gastronomy, dance, music and different activities throughout.

The Rojales Craft Market returns to mornings for the Autumn so if you are looking to while away an hour or so, looking for small a gift, piece of art or decoration, don’t miss the monthly Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales. Local artists put their work on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. It takes place on the 1st Sunday of every month January to June and September to December in the morning from 11am to 2pm and in July and August from 7pm to 11pm.

Another fun and unusual event for kids of all ages is the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the friends of the railways association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm with Miniature Train Rides during February and March on the 2nd Sunday from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Every month the Friends of the Railways Association host a miniature train
