QF Focus Magazine Pat Focuses On Charities
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the charities you support, and more importantly what happens to the money you donate? Well we are about to find out! Hopefully after reading more about the charities it may inspire you to give some time, think of them the next time you clear out your wardrobe or have a new look in the house, or maybe make a donation. Every little helps.
Samaritans in Spain Weeks of training and then further sessions with a mentor is just
the start of being a listener for the Samaritans in Spain. Lynda, the CEO, along with the new management team, are working hard to train suitable people to cover the phones and emails 24 hours a day, to listen to people when they really need someone to talk to. Volunteers must be good listeners, be sympathetic and of course they must realise that it may involve some unsociable hours as people don´t always have problems between 9- 2pm. English speakers of any nationality are always welcome. Although it has long been thought that the Samaritans were just there to talk people out of committing suicide, only 1% of calls are from suicidal people. The Samaritans are there for people who sometimes have no one else to talk to, or feel they have no where else to go. People have a range of concerns such as bullying, financial pressures, family and bereavement problems and even exam pressures. All callers are treated with the same respect. Along with the listeners, there are also volunteers who run the busy shop which helps fund the charity. In the near future there are plans to extend the back of the shop to improve the current facilities they have for their drop in centre, which at the moment is also used for training purposes. Expansion of other centres in Spain is also being looked at. As well as being on the other end of the phone or computer, with the assistance of the Consulate, they now visit English speakers who are in prison in Alicante. Sometimes a person may need a different kind of help from other sources and in these cases , the Samaritans are more than happy

to work with other charities such as Age Concern or Alzheimer’s if it is thought necessary. The money raised in the shop and from the fun days they organise each year with sponsors doing promotions, helps to keep the centre running, paying the utility bills including the very large phone bill, training new people, insurances etc. As well as the shops, donations are gratefully received from theatrical groups and bands and of course from the general public. Although there are approximately 70 volunteers overall, more are always needed to continue with their work to help the people who really need it. If anyone is interested in volunteering for any work with the Samaritans, please contact Steven Baker (General Manager) on 965 328 704 or 663 193 731.
