vulnerable when a prescription could not be immediately generated by a GP. This entailed Barry dealing with the Home Office directly – which no pharmacy in the land normally has to do on an individual basis!
Naloxone has been recognised on many instances as a life saving measure. This has lead Barry to have dealings with a number of drug agencies within the Health Board.
This has consequently lead to Hughes Chemist being the first retail pharmacy in Scotland to give a standardised supply of a Naloxone injection kit to an injecting drug user over 2 years ago. Another challenge that Barry has undertook was to liaise with the Glasgow Drug Crisis Centre to obtain regular supplies of liquid diazepam which is used as a detoxifying agent for their residential patients. This non-drug tariff preparation is very expensive and has a very short shelf life. The stocks have to be closely monitored, controlled and ordered timeously to ensure limited wastage and constant supply for the most needy in society.
Barry mostly has ownership of the phone in Hughes Chemist! Thanks to his exceptional memory for names and faces he is worth 20 Gigabytes to the boss.
both publicly and privately funded organisations, and knows each of the unit’s staff personally, and has been on organised visits to the majority of them. An aspect of the emergencies surrounding the immediate medicinal needs of these unfortunate people is dispensing prescription only and controlled drugs without a prescription.
Barry was instrumental in dealing with the Pharmacy Drug Inspectorate, and the homes themselves in setting up the standing operating procedures and protocols. These were required for establishing an innovative and novel solution where prescription only medicines could be given to the most

Everyone recognises Barry as the one to contact within Hughes Chemist. He ensures that he is aware of everything that is going on all of the time,” adds Gerry.
Barry decided that he wanted to work at Hughes Chemist after thoroughly enjoying his work experience.
