Barry has worked at Hughes for the last nineteen years having been recruited after completing his work experience within the pharmacy whilst still at school. He has completed a variety of training courses throughout

arry Houston, Pharmacy Dispender with Hughes Chemist in Glasgow, knows what it takes to ensure
his career in here and is described as ‘a very competent dispenser.’
Barry is a key holder for the shop and opens it early every morning. He regularly participates in all the services that are provided by the pharmacy. He has attended training courses recently for smoking cessation counselling, needle exchange processing, and also for dispensing naloxone injections, which is crucial for life saving in certain situations, for drug abusers! He is also responsible for purchasing stock and sundries within the pharmacy.
Barry is fi rst aid trained and has shown
on several occasions that he is more than capable of using these skills effectively.
“Over the years Barry has involved himself in numerous training events,” outlines proprietor and Pharmacist Gerry Hughes.
“He is a regular attendee at day aand evening meetings in the area which are organised by various departments within our Health Board. He runs the needle exchange programme within the shop and is a certifi ed IEP Naloxone Trainer. For more than a year now the new pharmacy manager, who is ages with Barry, has
encouraged him to further his own development. This has given him the impetus to develop his potential even further, & given him a new energy and drive. He lives for his job!”
Due to the location of the pharmacy, Hughes Chemist, within central Glasgow, has the opportunity to work alongside various services for the homeless, and drug addicts.
Hughes Chemist deals with half a dozen crisis units within the city centre, dealing with those with the most immediate needs in the community. Barry is the key fi gure in all of our dealings with these
