QF Focus Magazine Pat Focuses On Charities

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the charities you support, and more importantly what happens to the money you donate? Well we are about to find out! Hopefully after reading more about the charities it may inspire you to give some time, think of them the next time you clear out your wardrobe or have a new look in the house, or maybe make a dontation. Every little helps.

Paul Cunningham Nurses

Paul Cunningham Nurses was set up in 2009 in memory of Paul Cunningham, who after fighting a long hard battle, sadly died of spinal cancer at the age of just 33. Tricia Lee, originally worked in one of the charities shops as a volunteer, before taking over the task of fundraising. She tries to arrange 2 events a month to keep the money coming in, as well as an annual fashion show, and is in the process of organising a new golfing event which is due to start in October. The charities 3 shops are located in La Marina (which can take furniture), Playa Flamenca, and the first shop that opened in 2009, in Quesada. The shops are very well stocked with many items that have been generously donated, many of the clothes they receive are brand new with some still having the original shop labels attached. All the shops are run by volunteers, but they also have a manager who covers the 3 shops making sure that everything runs smoothly and all items are clearly marked correctly. The volunteers do a fabulous job giving up their spare time to raise much needed funds, even going as far as modelling some of the donated clothes at the fashion show, and that´s not just the women, some of the men also volunteer to strut their stuff!! Free nursing care is provided by the nurses to people who are in the latter stages of any terminal illness. The latter stages are classed as when the hospital say there is nothing more they can do for a patient, which means they can either spend their final days in hospital or if the patient wants, PCN can take over and try to make them as comfortable as possible in their own home, where they can also give support to the patient’s family. When the patient dies, they are also on hand to help with any funeral arrangements should the family want them to. The nurse’s workload can vary greatly from having 2 patients some weeks, and up to 20 on other weeks. The charity has a large store of beds, wheelchairs, mattresses, walking sticks and walking frames etc which is part of their equipment hire service. The equipment is provided free to their terminal patients but can be hired by the general public. The equipment obviously needs to be serviced and updated on a regular basis which can be very expensive. The charity needs all the support it can get to continue with the good work they provide. They are always looking for more volunteers, so if you would be interested in helping out in any way, please contact Tricia on 673 465 245 or email her on pcn.tricia@gmail.com. You can also visit the PCN website www.paulcunninghamnurses.com. If you need any assistance, you can contact them on 966 790 363.

Do you run a chartiy - would you like to let people know more about it. We are happy to run free of charge any forthcoming events and even publish a feature on your charity. Contact details are on page 4.
