Forthcoming Events
By Keith Nicol
It’s hot, hot, hot throughout Spain and hundreds of thousands of people have headed to the coast to enjoy the sea breeze, Mediterranean life and of course, the opportunity for a dip in the sea. While many of the theatres have closed for the summer, such events as the San Javier Jazz Festival are running to the end of July, which take place in the open air Amphitheatre in San Javier. More info at:
http://jazz.sanjavier.es. The last weekends of the month feature Carla Cook and Albert Bover Trio with the Royal Southern Brotherhood on Saturday July 25th and finishes on Friday July 31st with Our Spanish Heart featuring: Carles Benavent Trio plus Antonio Serrano and Tomasito with Joe Louis Walker closing the festival.
If you are looking for something a little different, especially as a gift or for decoration, there is a monthly Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales, where local artists put their work on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. It takes place on the 1st Sunday of every month and in August it’s open from 7pm to 11pm. Well worth a visit for a relaxing evening out. Many of the artist’s caves will be open for you to visit and during the year the markets have fun activities such as circus shows and workshops, live music, exhibitions and displays, special activities for children, tapas, drinks and more.
Another fun and unusual event for kids of all ages is the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the friends of the railways association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between

4pm and 8pm with Miniature Train Rides during February and March on the 2nd Sunday from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Every month the Friends of the Railways Association host a miniature train event at the railway museum in Torrellano. Donations of 1.50€ per visit are requested.
With changes in local governments throughout the region, most councils that underwent changes have as yet to come up with a new program of activities but in Torrevieja two events have been cancelled, one being an orchestral performance on August 7th and the other the cancellation for the Summer Carnival parade, so these are dates not for your diary.
The last week of July also features the fabulous and colourful Moors and Christians festivals. The Moors and Christians Fiesta in Villajoyosa from the 24th to the 31st July is well worth visiting. It is rated as one of the best in Spain and has been declared as being of International Tourist Interest. The highlight of the fiesta, is the desembarco or the disembarkation in the early hours on the morning of the 28th July. At 1am on Wednesday night or in reality Thursday morning there is a firework display in the Playa Centro. On Thursday 30th July at 8pm there is their Grand Children’s Carnival Parade finishing at the Iglesia Cristo Resucitado with the event finishing on Friday 31st July with a Paella competition in the Recinto del Mercadillo starting at 1pm.
Novelda’s Moors and Christians continues on Saturday 25th July with their Giants and Bigheads parade through the streets of the town at 7pm followed much later at midnight with the Nocturnal mascletas and pyrotechnic display from Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas to mark the closing of the fiesta. On Friday 31st July and Saturday August 1st at 10pm is the Raim Music Festival in the Parque del Oeste.
