Trampoline park plan at nightclub

WONDERLAND, one of Maid- stone's largest nightclubs, is set to close and be replaced with a tram- poline facility. There has been a nightclub in the Lockmeadow Entertainment Centre since itwas built in the late 1990s. Before recently being taken over

by Wonderland, it was occupied by nightspots including Ikon, Liquid and Envy. But the attraction in Barker Road

is due to close in August, and Land Securities has applied to Maidstone Council for it to be converted into a centre for leisure activities for chil- dren and families. A supporting statement for Grav-

ity Fitness Limited said: “The pro- posed trampoline facility would

diversify the leisure offer at Lock- meadow and increase the footfall to the area. “It would not operate outside the opening hours of other facilities available to Lockmeadow and would remove the amenity issues associated with people arriving and leaving the club late in the evening or early morning. “It would result in a significant improvement from the existing nightclub in terms of character, en- vironmental impact and amenity.” The £1.8m proposal, which prom-

ises to increase the number of jobs on the site from 31 to 65, comes two years after neighbouring nightclub Jumpin’ Jakswas replaced by a Hol- lywood Bowl bowling alley.

Detached homes plan for village

DEVELOPER Wealden Homes has applied to build three four-bed- room detached homes in Kenward Road, Yalding, next to Eastwells. Each home would have a garage and two parking spaces. “This is a simple extension of the existing house style in the road,”

said a supporting statement. Doug Worley, who owns the land, wrote: “The piece of ground has

no agricultural value and as long as sight lines for traffic are observed it would not impact on me or my farming business.”

downsmail.co.uk Ilsa to shape town’s future

THE future ofMaidstone town cen- tre has been placed in the hands of a new “change co-ordinator”. Ilsa Butler (36) has been ap-

pointed by Maidstone Town Centre Management (MTCM) as its change co-ordinator for the next 12 months. Her priorities will be to separate

the crime reduction partnership Maidsafe away from MTCM as a stand-alone business and to man- age the gradual absorption of the Town Team functions of events, marketing and regeneration under the MTCM umbrella. The temporary post was created

following the retirement of former town centremanager Bill Moss. Advertised with a salary of £26- £30,000, the job sought someone who could “develop and implement a strategy and plan for the coordi- nation of town centre activities within Maidstone”. Andy Davy, MTCM chairman,

said: "Ilsa was the stand-out candi- date from the 35 applicants who applied for the job in displaying the vision and creative thinking neces- sary in driving the business forward." Ilsa, who lives in Chart Sutton, at-

tended Cornwallis School. She has stepped up from her personal assis- tant and administrative roles at MTCM to fulfil the secondment. She said: “MTCMlooks forward to

further engaging with businesses and organisations to find out more about their needs and the role that the company can play in and around the town centre.” Ilsa’s job will involve liaising with Maidstone Council, the police, char- ities, businesses and churches to come up with options for the cre- ation of a new organisation to co- ordinate and manage Maidstone Town Centre. She will also be looking to see if

there is an enthusiasm for creating a Business Improvement District (Bid) in the town. Bid members pay an additional levy to fund projects and improve facilities within the Bid area.
