Oast conversion brings protests

AN oast house in West Farleigh that was permitted four years ago to be converted into five live-work units has been wholly occupied by a single business. In June 2011, Maidstone Council granted planning permission for the conversion of American Oast on the Tutsham Hall Estate, but in- stead of meeting the needs of indi- vidual entrepreneurs, the ground floor of the building has been used by Ferns Surfacing, which employs 14 staff on the site. Above it there are five self-contained flats, which contravene the terms of the con- sent. A planning application has been

submitted to legalise the existing use, drawing comments from neighbours angry that Maidstone Council has not taken any enforce- ment action. A supporting statement said:

“The building has been operating for some time for this mixed use and we are unaware of any evi- dence of harm arising by virtue of noise or activity.” However, one resident com- plained about traffic using the lane on which they live. They wrote: “I still await enforcement action and object to the change of use until the access is closed and not used by Tutsham Farm in perpetuity.”

MAIDSTONE’S Mote Park has been awarded TripAdvisor’s Cer- tificate of Excellence. The award, which comes seven months after Mote Park was voted the nation’s second favourite park, celebrates excellence in hospitality and is only given to those places which consistently achieve great re- views on the TripAdvisorwebsite. The council’s chair of heritage, culture and leisure, Cllr Gordon Newton, said: “Winning this cer- tificate is a real source of pride for the team at MaidstoneCouncil who looks after the park and the fantas- tic volunteers who donate their time and energy to help keep the park at its best.”

Cash for Nepal

A STREET collection outside a Maidstone church raised £300 in just five hours for the earthquake victims of Nepal. The money was collected at All Saints’ Church in Mill Street. The church has thanked every-

one who gave to the collection, which has been handed to the Nepalese community in Maid- stone, to forward it to the correct destination.
