Arrests in road safety campaign Glass aack in club
THE first week of a road safety awareness campaign in Kent has seen four people from Maidstone arrested for driving of- fences. Kent Police has been working with
KCC’s road safety team and other agencies since June 1 to discourage mobile phone use at the wheel, drink-driving and speed- ing as part of road safety checks at loca- tions including Maidstone, Barming and Marden. From June 1 to 7, 37 peoplewere arrested
for drink-driving or driving while unfit through drugs. Another 12 tickets were issued to those
using their mobile phone. At Lockmeadow in Maidstone, Kent Fire
and Rescue spoke to about 200 young driv- ers about the dangers of using a mobile phone at the wheel as part of its Phone Safe campaign.
46 Maidstone Town July 2015
In the last three years, 143 crashes – three serious – across Kent involved drivers aged 17 to 24 who said they were distracted by phones, texts or something inside their ve- hicle.
Road safety and safeguarding manager at
Kent Fire and Rescue, Alexa Kersting- Woods said: “Our statistics speak loud and clear – mobile phone distraction can cause serious and sometimes fatal crashes on Kent’s roads. “The impact a crash has is wide-reaching
devastation – it’s heart-breaking. Our crews are often the first on the scene of a crash and are faced with such harrowing scenes, which can stay with them for life.” Maidstone’s firefighterswere back out in Jubilee Squareafter the campaign, hoping to convince more young drivers to be phone safe and to explain about the dan- gers of mobile phone distraction.
CLUBBERS are being asked to come forward after an horrific attack in a Maidstone nightclub. A 21-year-old man was left with wounds to his

The attack is said to have happened between 10.30pm and 11.15pm on Saturday, June 13, when it is alleged the victimwas approached by a man who smashed a glass or bottle into his face and punched him in the face with the broken glass still in his hand.
