Pub could be replaced by flats
APLANto convert another failing pub into houses has been lodged with Maidstone Council. Texo Developments and Shep-
herd Neame, which sold the pub, say the British Queen is no longer viable. The pub, on Square Hill Road, whichwas built at the turn of the century, has been on the market for £250,000 since February. The on-going trend of failing
pubs means the council now must consider, specifically, the impact the pub’s closure would have on the local community, whether al- ternative facilities are available and how far away. The proposal on the table seeks to demolish the building and replace it with 14 apartments for first-time buyers. If approved, the new three- and four-storey block would comprise four one-bedroom apartments and 10 two-bed properties, taking up the footprint of the pub and its car park. Parking would be provided and access would be via the exist- ing entrance off Square Hill Road.

THE Salvation Army Major, Grayson Williams, who piloted Maidstone Churches Winter Shelter, has been ho- noured by his Rotary club with its highest award – a Paul Harris Fellow- ship. Grayson, a member of the Rotary
Club of Maidstone for six years, helped build in 2013 a team of Maid- stone churches and volunteers to pro- vide night shelter, food, company and advice to homeless people sleeping rough in the town. Last winter the scheme was ex- panded to cover a longer period and help more homeless. Grayson is retiring from the Salva-
tion Army after 34 years and is mov- ing with his wife to the south coast.
The British Queen pub The developer says the site is in a
quiet residential area, which will benefit from the removal of the noise and disturbance associated with a pub, and accords with pol- icy constraints in that it has been shown that the loss of the public house, while unfortunate, is not a significant facility in the area, with comparable facilities nearby. It adds: “The changing climate has simply resulted in less people using such a facility.”
