Flats scheme for injured veterans

TWO blocks of apartments for wounded, injured and sick ser- vicemen andwomenare to be built on allotments behindRoyal British Legion bungalows inAylesford. The site off Hermitage Lane will provide 24 homes with either one or two bedrooms, a shared central gar- den and car parking. Landowner Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) has been given ap- proval by Tonbridge and Malling Council for the scheme on a 0.7 hectare plot. Planning consultant Clague said

RBLI had been reviewing its overall housing requirements and had found a pressing need to accommo- date ex-service personnel who are not in need of care. The land at Her- mitage Lane would be large enough to create “a small sustainable com- munity for veterans”. The three-storey buildings would

be designed in keeping with the ar- chitecture of the nearby bungalows. The apartments would be pre- dominantly for single people offi-

cially classed as wounded, injured or sick, and designed with large enough rooms to ensure access for all and able to accommodate chang- ing personal circumstances. Clague said the shared gardens

would “provide a space where vet- erans can find solace and calm, com- munity and spirit.” The site is close to the Royal

British Legion Village and Preston Hall on the opposite side of the Lon- don Road and to new retail devel- opment where work has just started. The existing access drive to the rear of the bungalows would be retained as a private street and allotments re- located to makeway for the homes. Tonbridge and Malling Council’s

report said the site remained a rela- tively tranquil location behind the frontage of bungalowdevelopment. It said: “This location close to sev- eral amenities and transport routes would however seem appropriate for relatively small scale accommo- dation linked to the main RBLI site and its associated community.”

Trader beaten in robbery

THIS is the man police want to speak to after a brutal attack on a Maidstone shopkeeper. The CCTV images were released

after the owner of the Mediter- ranean store in Loose Road was re- peatedly punched around the face in an incident in which cash was taken fromthe till. The owner of the shop told police

that after he opened the till to give a customer some change, the man jumped over the counter and punched him repeatedly in the face and head. Themanis then reported to have stolen about £200 fromthe till before running off along Barton Road. Investigating officerDC Ben Clat-

worthy said: “This was a vicious at- tack on an unsuspecting

shopkeeper who despite being beaten and bruised was fortunate to have not suffered more serious injuries.” Anyone who recognises the man

is asked to call 01732 379145 quot- ing reference YY/9639/15 or Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Retirement homes planned

NEWretirement homes could enable more of Maidstone’s senior cit- izens to stay close to the shops and community. Retirement house builder McCarthy and Stone has acquired an in-

terest in land at Chaucer House in Knightrider Street and is propos- ing to redevelop the site with retirement living accommodation. A community consultation programme has been launched and feedback will be incorporated into the final plans prior to the sub- mission of a planning application. Aspokesperson for McCarthy and Stone said:“We are committed

to engaging with the local community and will be offering residents the opportunity to meet with the project team to discuss the early proposals in the comingweeks. This will ensure residents and stake- holders can view and comment on the proposed plans and allow local people to speak with the team and provide feedback.”
