Scooter addict keeps on riding

AN endurance scooter rider from Maidstone is finding it hard to kick his habit of taking marathon road trips – in fact, his “final ride” turned out to be two! Steve Cooper (pictured) is well knownfor his solo stunts, but for the Land Rover salesman from Mayfair Avenue, his adventures were sup- posed to be coming to an end. He told the Downs Mail: “Apart

from possibly riding across theUSA on a scooter again in 2016, I think it’s time to step away from the self-in- dulgent long-distance suffering . . . but Iwant to do it in style.” However, the chance of a 1,040-

mile endurance there-and-back ride to Scotland in 20 hours – the week- end before his final 1,500-mile trip through France, Belgium, Holland andGermany and back in 32 hours – proved too much to resist. Back home in Maidstone, after his

fifth Ironbutt Ride and the trip to Germany on his Kymco Downtown 300 scooter, with just three hours sleep, the unflagging 50-year-old said: “I found the 1,000-mile rides relatively easy, so I wanted to see

New powers used to keep teen from estate

A MAIDSTONE teenager has been warned to keep away from a housing estate in Tovil or face arrest. Golding Homes housing associa-

tion has been awarded a new type of injunction by Sevenoaks Youth Court against the 17-year old for anti-social behaviour. The “without notice” injunction

just how far I could go; you experi- ence so much more when you ride for an entire day. After six hours it doesn’t get any more painful. “Do this kind of ride on a motor-

cycle and no one would care, but do it on a scooter and the novelty makes it something a bit special. I love the idea of using something designed for an urban commute and riding it all day and all night. “Who knows what’s next; maybe

an appointment with a psychia- trist?”

was granted against the boy who threatened a Golding Homes ten- ant, the family and their property. The interim injunction sets an ex- clusion area around the property on an estate in Tovil; if the man is witnessed breaching the exclusion area, the police can arrest him. Stephen Timms, Golding Homes community safety advisor, said: “It doesn’t matter what age you are, or if you are a Golding Homes resi- dent or not. If you cause anti-social

behaviour that affects our residents, we will take action against you using whatever powers are avail- able to us.” Sarah Christy, of Capsticks Solic-

itors, who represented Golding Homes, said: “We believe this is one of the first applications of its kind in the country and it demon- strates that the legislation works to provide a quick and efficient rem- edy against perpetrators of anti-so- cial behaviour who are under 18.” The injunction powers are

awarded under the Anti-Social Be- haviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. This is the first time the hous- ing association, barrister and court have made use of the powers to ob- tain an injunction order against an under 18-year-old since they be- came available in March this year.

Benefit fraudster must pay £7,000

A PARKWOOK woman who said she lived alone in order to claim benefits was given a 100-hour community order and told to repay £7,041 after being found guilty of benefit fraud. Jackie Castle, ofWallis Avenue, admitted two charges of fraud at Maid-

stone Magistrates’ Court after a joint prosecution by Maidstone Council and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). She was ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge and £85 court costs. Mrs Castle was found to have claimed income support, housing benefit and council tax benefit without declaring that she had a partner.
