downsmail.co.uk Park award

MAIDSTONE’S Mote Park has been awarded TripAdvisor’s Cer- tificate of Excellence. The award, which comes seven months after Mote Park was voted the nation’s second favourite park, celebrates excellence in hospitality and is only given to those places which consistently achieve great re- views on the TripAdvisorwebsite. The council’s chair of heritage, culture and leisure, Cllr Gordon Newton said: “Winning this certifi- cate is a real source of pride for the team at Maidstone council who looks after the park and the fantas- tic volunteers who donate their time and energy to help keep the park at its best.”

Gurkha thanks

THE retiring Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Richard Thick, led a service in Maidstone to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Gurkha service to the British Crown. The ceremony began in Brenchley Gardens with the mayor giving a short speech thanking the regiment for its loyal service and concluded with a wreath-laying and short service at the Gurkha statue in the Maidstone Museum forecourt. This is the only Gurkha statue outside London.

New mayor’s focus is on helping community

THE new mayor of Maidstone is Cllr Daniel Moriarty, who repre- sents residents in Park Wood. Cllr Moriarty’s parents were

from Tralee, County Kerry, but he was born in Maidstone and at- tended St. Francis RC School in Week Street. On leaving school, he started

work as an apprentice papermaker for Balston’s Springfield Mill – and found himself back in class a week later at Maidstone Technical Col- lege studying the history and de- velopment of paper-making. At the end of a five-year appren- ticeship, Daniel became senior pa- permaking technologist and was with Whatmans for 35 years. Now retired, he enjoys garden-

ing and spending time with family and friends in America and Ire- land, while keeping in close contact with family inAustralia. Cllr Moriarty has been married

to Lana since 1974 and is a proud father and grandfather to daughter Kelly and grandchildren Jake and Conor.

Cllr Moriarty says he is commit-

ted to serving the community, par ticularly in regeneration pro- grammes, decent homes, play areas and caring for the elderly. The deputy mayor is Cllr Derek

Butler, who represents Boxley. Born in Lewisham, he moved to

the Medway towns in 1973 and then to Maidstone in 1984. He became a borough councillor
