LEARNING FOR LIFE

NO sooner does the door close on one set of exams than another opens and in rolls a second bunch! While euphoric teenagers are celebrating the end of a taxing few months cramming for GCSE, AS and A-levels, parents of their younger siblings have barely time to draw breath before it’s into the onslaught of 11+ revision – or the Kent Test, to give it its ‘proper’ title.

Statistics show that more young people than ever before suffer from anxiety attacks and stress during their school years. The children’s charity Childline recently revealed a staggering 200% increase in exam stress counselling – with school and education topping the league of young people’s problems. Most parents would agree that raising a happy and contented child is more important than hot- housing a recalcitrant learner through the minefield that starts with ABC and ends with NVQ – or, if you’re among the academia, a BA, MSc or possibly a PhD. It’s nonetheless difficult to

avoid the peer pressure that comes with education today, even if a child has a happy and stable homelife.

A child that struggles can find himself mocked and bullied by his peers - or singled out for special attention, albeit well- intended, by the teaching staff. Thankfully, the British education system remains among the best in the world – amply

DOES YOUR CHILD NEED EXTRA HELP WITH EXAMS, MATHS OR ENGLISH?

illustrated by the high number of overseas students wanting to study here.

Pre-school and nursery education is often outstanding, giving children as young as two the first sure-footed steps on a pathway to scholastic success. Systems are now in place to spot slow learners much more speedily than they were half a century ago and by the time

children reach the stage of sitting important exams, many of the issues have been addressed. Help exists with private tuition prior to 11+ and, again, through secondary school – especially useful for those children for whom English is a second language. Kip Mcgrath is one education centre which provides children in Maidstone and the surrounding communities with private tutoring in both English and maths, with assistance in reading, spelling and comprehension to students who are having difficulty with their school work or just want to do better.

The number of schools opting to become academies means senior students now enjoy a much broader curriculum than may once have been the case, with a wide range of vocational opportunities sitting alongside more conventional courses. Whatever the outcome – if your child succeeds in surviving 14+ years of education unscathed, it is something to be celebrated!
