legacy award Continued from page one Mr Fowle highlighted three big campaigns:  The fierce and successful battle to persuade KCC to build a foot crossing over the A249 in Detling after the death in 2000 of Jade Hobbs (8) and her gran as they crossed to buy sweets – and the paper’s public fund which raised more than £100,000 towards the cost.  The successful battle in 2010 to defeat the Kent International Gate- way (KIG) plan for a rail link and warehousing.  Two campaigns to retain key services in Maidstone Hospital and forming Mash (Maidstone ac- tion for services in hospital). He explained he was still cam- paigning – now as chairman of The Mote CC Development Committee to establish a modernised sporting and community centre at TheMote. Mr Fowle praised the Jubilee Church for its leading role in Cele- brate Maidstone and recognising the role of “ordinary people doing extraordinary work”. Other presentations concentrated

on these local legacies: sports, arts, business, next generation, educa- tion, local government.

Ultra-runner trains for ‘world’s toughest races’

A DAD from Allington is in train- ing for two of the toughest races in the world. Not only is Tremayne Cowdry

(41) taking part in the gruelling Spartathlon in Athens, he is warm- ing up with a 180-mile run through theWelsh mountains. The father of two, fromWatermill

Close, said: “There’s no prize money, no fame, just the knowledge that I have completed something that most people will never do.” Tremayne, who has run 29 marathons and 32 ultra marathons, manages his own landscaping and property management company, TNC Property and Landscapes. He says this year’s double challenge will raise his game still further. He added: “I'm at the point now

where I feel there are no races in the world I can't enter, so I've been look- ing for and entering some of tough- est races I can find.” The run from Athens to Sparta at

the end of September has to be com- pleted in 36 hours, but that is just the beginning of the story. “The challenge,” according to

and family balance is hard to main- tain.”

Most weeknights he trains for an

hour and at the weekend usually races a marathon/ultra, or 25 miles. He said: “I try to do this before

10am so that I can catch up on pa- perwork in the afternoon and on Sunday I try to spend time with the family, but when I’m in peak train- ing I'll be running 60-70 miles a week.”

Tremayne, “is not the distance, not the time, not the mountain to be tra- versed during the night, not the 40 degree heat and sub-zero nights, nor the fact it’s all on scorching tarmac, but it’s the cut-off times every 5km that make it really hard; you have to reach each of 70 checkpoints by a certain time, or you're out. The pace is relentless.” In June, he warms up with the 180-mile Dragon’s Back race, navi- gating theWelsh mountains in what is billed as one of the toughest mountain races in the world. He said: “The training, the work

Tremayne is now looking for a sponsor to fund T-shirts for this year’s “unofficial British Spartathlon team”. Hesaid:“We are hoping to put on

a good show for Britain and I cannot wait to take part in these events. I want my kids to be proud of their dad and my future grandkids to know what I did, and if I can en- courage or inspire anyone to get up, run and keep fit then that's all the better.”

Anyone interested in sponsoring

the team should email Tremayne at britishspartathlonteam@gmail.com or visit www.britishspartathlon- team.org.
