Trust in court over death

THE trial of a hospital trust and two doctors over the death of young mother Frances Cappuccini after she gave birth could be moved out of the county. Maidstone and TunbridgeWells

NHS Trust is charged with corpo- rate manslaughter and anaes- thetists Errol Cornish (67) and Nadeem Azeez (52) are accused of manslaughter. Only Cornish appears on the in- dictment at present as Azeez is be- lieved to have returned toPakistan. The case – the first of its kind –

will be tried by a High Court judge. John Cooper,QCfor the trust, indi- cated at Maidstone Crown Court that he would apply for it to be transferred out of Kent – possibly to the High Court in London. “It is the first prosecution of a

trust for an offence of corporate manslaughter,” he said. “It is clear there will be important legal issues at the heart of the case. “It is more appropriate to be dealt

with out of the immediate area. Many of the witnesses are employ-

ees of the trust.” Judge Philip Stat- mansaid the application to transfer the case could be made when pleas are entered on August 6. The trial was set for January 11 next year. Cornish, of Holmbury Park, Bromley, is a doctor of 30 years. Prosecutor Sarah Campbell said

theCrownwas seeking the extradi- tion of Azeez, formerly of Chestnut Avenue, TunbridgeWells. Aprevious hearing had been told

he was seriously ill. Cornish’s un- conditional bailwas continued.

Nursery improves rating

BUSY Bees Day Nursery at Maid- stone Hospital has been rated good by Ofsted. It follows a report a year ago re- quiring improvements at the nurs- ery, which is part of a national chain.

Inspector Jo Caswell recognised

the nursery’s “outstanding” leader- ship and management as key to progress at the centre, which opened at the hospital in purpose- built premises in 2005. It now has 175 children on the register. The inspector added: “The nurs-

ery offers a busy, friendly and very caring environment. Children enjoy their day and make good progress in their learning.”

She added that the nursery man-

ager and her leadership team had made significant improvements since the last inspection, with ex- tensive plans for the rate of im- provement to continue. The report concluded: “The nurs-

ery manager is highly motivated, extremely focused and leads a ded- icated team. The combined com- mitment from all staff to deliver the highest-quality practice is evident across the nursery.” The report suggests further im-

provements could be made by en- hancing outdoor areas to make them more stimulating and pur- poseful for those who like learning outside.

Primary school plan lodged

KCC has lodged an application to build a primary school in Lan- gley Park, off Sutton Road. The two-form entry school is being partly funded by new hous-

ing developments from TaylorWimpey and Redrow Homes. The proposed school would have 70 car parking spaces, a play-

ing field and play area. It would create 44 full and part-time jobs. TaylorWimpey has permission for 600 homes, a shop, pub, al- lotments and a nature reserve at Langley Park, while Redrow has unveiled its new flats at The Coppice, south of Bicknor Wood and opposite the Renault garage in Sutton Road, Park Wood. The Coppice will contribute £464,000 towards land for the new primary school and £163,400 towards secondary school education. The initial release at the Coppice will include six flats and four-bedroom detached family homes. The Coppice will include public open space, a play area and mature trees on a site bordered by ancient woodland to the north.
