Crossing call to keep pupils safe
RESIDENTS at Leybourne have launched a campaign for a zebra crossing near the village school. The parish council is backing parents’ calls for safety measures in Oxley Shaw Lane after a near miss.
Debbie White, a midday super-
visor at St Peter and St Paul Pri- mary school in Rectory Lane North, is appealing to KCC to in- stall a safe place to cross after the school sent awarning note home to parents. The letter urged them to teach children about road safety after an accident near-miss. Mrs White said she had taught
her 10-year-old son Harry to look bothways, butwas too afraid to let him walk home with his friends
because of the danger from the busy road. She said that a safe crossing
would help to teach children from a young age to respect traffic. Leybourne Parish Council chair-
man Bob Ulph has asked KCC to look into providing a zebra cross- ing or a lollipop person. He said: “The concern is that children are walking out at the same time as a lot of school traffic.” The parish council has also used
its website to urge residents to back the appeal. AKCCspokesman said the site’s
crash history and local support would be considered. Highways engineers would investigate the issue.

No let-up for football club
ALTHOUGH the football season is drawing to a close there is a busy time ahead for Snodland Town FC. Chairman Mel Rayfield said: "The annual presentation evening takes place on May 23. Prior to the event there is the penalty shootout." The five-a-side tournament is
being held over theweekend of June 27 and 28 when more than 150 teams are likely to be involved, from six years old to veterans. Dave Jeal, the club's CEO, is ex- pecting a huge turnout. He said: "We expect this year's to be the best so far," he said. "There will be food and drink stalls and other attrac- tions aswell as the football."
Mel said the club continues to
move forward with the develop- ment of their own facilities. Work will continue over the close season with the re-siting of the team dugouts and more spectator hard- standing. It is also hoped to start work on
the provision of spectator seating. A newwater supply to the ground has been installed, as will an electricity supply. Work to enhance the stan- dard of the pitch will also be under- taken and the club are looking for someone to assist in pitch prepara- tion.
