Where I live...

West Malling Parish Council These are some of the items discussed at West Malling Parish Council meetings in March and April.

Election of parish councillors The returning officer at Tonbridge and Malling Council received sufficient candidate notifications for the 11 seats on the parish council by the deadline (April 9) to declare these candidates as duly elected (unopposed). The first full parish council meeting was scheduled for Monday, May 18 and is combined with the parish council’s annual general meeting.

Street lighting Kent County Council has confirmed that its part-night time lighting scheme is to be scrapped when the county’s street lights have been converted to less costly LED lights. The £40m light replacement scheme will be introduced in two phases: in the first, residential areas will be converted, taking about a year to complete. Phase two will see the town centres and the main routes being converted. Running costs for the new lights are predicted to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by

60% and deliver annual savings of £5.3m. The conversion is scheduled to begin by the end of 2015 and will take three years to complete.

Parking review Parish councillors have expressed their dismay to Tonbridge and Malling Council at the number of complaints they have already received about the West Malling parking review. Parish councillors were concerned that the borough council appeared to be allowing other influences, including the general election and staff shortages, to take priority over re-evaluating the impact of the review on residents. Consequently, parish councillors have offered to facilitate a “display and discussion day” to investigate the effect that residents feel the review will have on their quality of life.

West Malling Village Hall This will be one of three sites in West Malling for a new defibrillator unit. A second unit, also provided by match funding from KCC Cllr Trudy Dean, will be sited at West Malling Baptist Church in Swan Street. A third unit, funded by Malling District Lions Club, was

Lots to love at Cupcake Heart

Hidden away in a grade II listed building in Larkfield, Cupcake Heart is the kind of cafe you want to find in the Garden of England. The cafe’s extensive breakfast or lunch menu can be enjoyed in its two tearooms or in the large garden and play area hidden at the back. There’s even an ice cream parlour in the garden.

While you relax in the garden and choose from the menu, which includes jacket potatoes, pulled pork baguettes, paninis,

Mutual Discovery Artois-Kent (DMAK) For more than 25 years, the Mutual Discovery Artois-Kent Association (DMAK) has worked to provide cultural and economic exchanges between the county of Kent and the Artois Region, an ancient French province which includes Malling’s twin town, Auchel. The next activity is a “Family Day Out” on Sunday, June 7 to Boulogne to visit the Nausicaa Giant Aquarium and, for the more adventurous, sand-yachting on the beach. Do consider contacting carolepluck@aol.com about future trips, or if you would like more information about DMAK’s past activities, check their website http://artkent.free.fr/b- html/histo.htm

Finally please note that parish councillors can be contacted via the parish clerk on 01732 870872 during office hours. Or why not come to the next monthly meeting on Monday, June 1st at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, Norman Road, West Malling?
