downsmail.co.uk Rugby club’s treble joy

MAIDSTONE Rugby Club crowned an unbeaten season by adding the RFU Intermediate Cup to the league title and regional cup. They beat Shropshire side Bridg-

north 31-18 at Twickenham in the intermediate final to cinch the tre- ble.

The result ended Bridgnorth’s 38-

match unbeaten run as Maidstone, who recently won the London 2 (SE) championship, scored four tries.

Olly Newton,Alex Eastwood and

Josh Pankhurst crossed in the first half, and an Eddie Cranston try early in the second half, combined with Ben Pitkin’s accuracy, gave Maidstone enough of a cushion to

see off a brave second-half fight- back. Maidstone, whoare captained by BenWilliams, sealed the league by beating Sussex side Crowbor- ough 50-17 in their final home

league fixture. Maidstone’s first XV are one of

Kent’s top clubs and won London 3 (SE) as unbeaten champions in the 2012-13 season.

Lorry park idea near homes ‘makes no sense’

Continued from page one Cllr Trudy Dean, KCC member

for Malling Central, said: “We un- derstand KCC has been looking at this as a potential site for Operation Stack. We are opposed to having it at Aylesford Newsprint. To access the site, lorries would have to go past a lot of residential accommo- dation. “It makes no sense to replace an employment site with a car park

that will be sitting there empty waiting for some use a few days a year.” KCCis drawing up an action plan

with haulage industry representa- tives, business leaders, the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel, Kent Police, Highways England, ferry compa- nies and local authorities that will be presented to the Government. The plan will decide whether to have one large lorry park or a num-

ber of smaller ones. Cllr Dean added: “The sensible

thing would be to expand one or more service stations along the mo- torway. This would be cheaper and more economic than having a single car park in the countryside.” Local MEP Catherine Bearder is campaigning to make the French strikes illegal by claiming that they breach one of the main principles of the EU – freedom of trade.

News Carer ‘a good

role model’ SNODLAND childminder Heidi Roots-Horton has been rated good after her latest Ofsted inspection. An inspector said she provided a

good range of toys and resources and children were free to make their own choice about their play. The childminder, based in Mill

Lane, was said to be a good role model, and talked to the children and babies to help them develop their language and communication skills. She also provided a safe and se-

cure environment and carried out risk assessments, minimising haz- ards. Partnerships with parents were strong, with regular exchanges of information, and the childminder had a good knowledge of the chil- dren’s interests and stages of de- velopment. Children were given daily op- portunities to exercise in the fresh air, with visits to local parks to sup- port physical development. An outstanding rating could be

achieved if children were given more opportunities to play with natural resources to extend their learning of the world around them, and if the childminder had stronger links with other settings attended by the children.
