West Malling school judged outstanding

CHILDREN, parents, staff and governors at West Malling Primary school were celebrating after the school was judged “outstanding” by inspectors.

The school, which has 210 pupils, had already been recognised as “good” with outstanding features in its last Ofsted report in 2013.

Now it has received an “outstanding” judgment from Siams (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) who judge schools for their Christian distinctiveness, leadership and management and the quality of their religious education and collective worship. The framework was recently toughened up, making West Malling’s achievement all the more impressive.

The report said the Norman Road school was a place where Christian values were deeply embedded, with an inclusive ethos that treated every child as having great worth, enabling them to grow in confidence and character.

The inspector noted that school leaders had substantially improved achievement and attendance so that most children achieved at or above national standards. The school was encouraged to find ways to share its innovative practice with other schools.

Headteacher Matthew Clark said: “The whole team are delighted with the Family fun day

result. For everyone here, this report reflects what we know to be true – that West Malling is a very special school where individuals thrive because of the family feel that we seek to nurture. It’s heartening when someone else from outside the school community can recognise that we are dedicated to being our best and striving for better.”

The Siams report also praised the link

between the school and its local parish church, St Mary’s. The Rev David Green, priest-in-charge, who is a governor and whose children attend the school, was delighted with the report. He said: “The headteacher and his staff and the governing body all deserve an enormous amount of credit for all that they do to serve the children of our local area and their families.”
