Fitness trackers:
waist or wrist? Wrist-worn personal tracking de-
vices are becoming more popular to track steps/day; however, scien- tists have tra- ditionally used waist-worn de- vices in research. A recent study by the American Collegs of Sports Medicine (ACSM) counted steps taken on a tread- mill and com- pared them to steps/day mea-
sured using the same research-grade device attached to both the wrist and waist at the same time. It also com- pared wrist and waist devices for step counting in real life. Compared to the waist device, the wrist device under- counted steps on the treadmill and over-counted steps in real life.
