campaignseries.co.uk Sex offenders’ sentences cut

A CAERPHILLY man jailed for a string of “grotesque” sexual offences committed against his own family had his sentence reduced by top judges last week. The father and grandfather

terrorised minors who were either his children or in his care, London’s Appeal Court heard on Thursday, and ap- peared to “lack all moral compass”.

He committed his crimes

over a 15-year time span, said Mr Justice Stewart, and was aided by his then wife. His former wife played a lesser role, although she had been branded an “enthusias- tic participant”. In one incident of gross in- decency, the father had “en- couraged” his son to commit a sex act with his wife, the boy’s stepmother.

Former Campaign worker is cleared

AFORMER Caerphilly Campaign work- er has been found not guilty of sexually assaulting a woman on a night out in Newport city centre. Gareth Brown, aged 42, of Islwyn Street, Abercarn, denied the charge relating to an alleged incident at the Travelodge hotel in Newport in May 2013. On the final day of his trial at Car- diff Crown Court on Monday, the six men and six women of the jury cleared him of the charge. The jury returned a unanimous verdict. Brown sobbed and gave thanks as the

verdict was read out. Giving evidence last week, Brown said

the woman was awake when he got into bed with her. He told jurors that he was encouraged

to “cwtch” her, and insisted he had her consent. He denied claims that he had per-

formed a sexual act on the claimant while she was asleep and said he would never had done so if she was. Prosecutor Janet McDonald said the claimant had taken drugs, namely M- Cat, that night while Brown had taken cocaine. Both had been drinking on the night. They headed back to the hotel in the

early hours of the morning after going to a number of bars in the city centre, the court heard last week.

The father committed his crimes in “pursuit of his own sexual gratification”, said Mr Justice Stewart. His fellow judge, Lord Jus-

tice Davis, said that “all nor- mal moral boundaries were completely lost” within the family. The father, who cannot be named to protect his victims, was handed a total 19-year jail term at Cardiff Crown

Court in August of last year. He was convicted of 15 of- fences, including gross inde- cency, indecent assault and assault causing actual bodily harm. His former wife received

a six-year term for three of- fences, including gross inde- cency. The pair’s case reached the

Appeal Court as they chal- lenged their sentences, which

their lawyers claimed were “too heavy”. Mr Justice Stewart, sitting

with Lord Justice Davis and Mr Justice Lewis, resolved to cut both sentences. He said the father’s punish- ment would have been more appropriate for a series of rapes. In the woman’s case there

was “some mitigation”, he observed. One of the victims

said later that she was the only adult who had been kind to him. The father’s sentence was

cut by four years to 15 years, and his ex-wife’s was reduced from six years to a five-year sentence. “In all the circumstances,

and reflecting the mitigation, we accept that her sentence was manifestly excessive”, the appeal judge concluded.
