Rover adds newfuel-saving frugality to stylish Evoque
AN ALL-NEW diesel engine will let the Range Rover Evoque hit 68mpg, its makers claim. Land Rover is aiming to add fru-
Mercedes monster is also a luxury wagon
IF YOU found Mercedes’ im- posing G 63 AMG 6x6 a lit- tle too wild, the German car maker has now produced a more manageable alternative to its premium monster truck offering. The basic recipe is the same
– take a G Wagon and pump it full of steroids – but, at least with the firm’s G 500 4x4², it’l be easier to park in town than its six-wheeled cousin. As with the larger variant there’s no shortage of power on tap, with the G 500 4x4² using Mercedes’ new 4litre AMG V8 motor tuned to out- put a healthy 422 horsepower.
This G 500 rides on 22-inch wheels, and is clad in carbon fibre detachable body panels. To ensure that the G 500 is equally at home away from the Tarmac, theG63AMG6x6 donates an amended version of the ruggedly determined permanent all-wheel-drive powertrain with portal axles. The chassis has dual spring/ damper struts. On the inside, theG500 4x4² occupants enjoy comfort and an ambience on a par with a luxury saloon. Just don’t expect much

gality to the Evoque’s stylish port- folio of trim grades, materials op- tions and paint colours. Hand-in-hand with the new, much-improved fuel economy, the ‘Ingenium’ eD4 diesel has been signed off with just 109g/km of CO2 emissions for the entry-level front-wheel drive version, putting the car in the £20 per year road tax bracket. The improvements come at the same time as a minor series of visual updates to the popular com- pact SUV. Land Rover’s fuel economy has come under fire in recent years, with the predominantly diesel ranges falling well behind the times for efficiency. However, as the firm itself admits, sales have not suffered. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Crea- tive Officer said: “The Range Rov- er Evoque first established and then dominated the luxury com- pact SUV sector generating world- wide acclaim and sales success.” Jeremy Hicks, Jaguar Land Rov-
er UK Managing Director added: “The Evoque has proven to be an enormous success in the UK with sales of 62,000 since its launch back in 2011.”
