Trouble is being reduced
GWENT Police say a two-day dispersal order in Caerphilly to deal with incidents of anti-social behaviour (ASB) and criminal damage is prov- ing effective. The order – in effect from
5pm Friday to 5pm Sunday – was introduced following a spate of disturbances and covered a number of areas in the town centre. But Gwent Police reported just one call over the weekend for an ASB – on Sunday afternoon, to a group of youths at the bus station. Dispersal orders provide police officers and community support officers with the powers to direct anyone to leave a specified area if they are involved in anti-social behaviour. If they return to that area after be- ing moved on, they face be- ing arrested. Caerphilly Inspector Ga-
reth Jones spoke of a worry- ing trend ahead of the week- end. “This is an emerging problem, in particular in the town and through the side streets, mainly around Fri- day and Saturday, from 6pm to 10pm,” he said. Anyone who witnesses sus- picious activity at any time is encouraged to ring 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
‘I wasn’t racing’
A CAERPHILLY man ac- cused of causing death by dangerous driving during a “race” along a lane near Bedwas told police when ar- rested that he had taken an overdose as he had “watched his sister die”. Aaron Bridgeman, of Lans-
bury Park in Caerphilly, de- nies causing Claire Frank- lin’s death by dangerous driving on December 23, 2013. It is alleged he had been
driving a red Peugeot car, but left the scene after the crash with his friend and stepsister – who had been riding pillion on a motorbike – in the road. Yesterday, PC Alexa Jones,
of Gwent Police, told New- port Crown Court that Bridgeman, then of Aber- tillery, had flagged down her patrol car on the evening af- ter the incident, while they were looking for him. She agreed with defend-
ing counsel Jeff Jones that Bridgeman said: “I have taken 30 paracetamol tablets. I have just watched my sister die.” On Monday, the court heard
how Bridgeman was accused of zooming up Pandy Lane

near Llanbradach, a wind- ing, unlit road, inaredPeuge- ot along with biker Jason Szalkowski at around 5pm. Prosecutor Ieuan Bennett said a stream next to the road had burst its banks. When the vehicles reached the water they were unable to stop in time because they were trav- elling too quickly, he
said.Ms Franklin, known as Vicky, fell from the bike and landed on Bridgeman’s windscreen. She landed on the roadwhere another car drove over her, the court heard. It was not in the public interest to bring charges against Mr Szalkowski as he was too seriously injured, the court heard. Bridgeman, 35, denied racing, telling police he was travelling at a safe distance behind Mr Szalkowski. Proceeding.
