Son facing jail after incident at mum’s home

A MAN who forced his way into the bedroom his mum had locked herself into during a row over cash faces a custodial sentence. Stephen Dobbins, 26, also

grabbed the phone off his mother Margaret when she dialled 999, a court heard last week. She was able to take the phone

back but he threw water at her, Newport Magistrates’ Court heard.

Dobbins admitted the incident

at the property in Derwen Close, Hengoed, on February 4.

The court heard

how Dobbins lost his temper after his mother did not give him money he had asked her for, for his car. He was “ranting and

raving” and kicked and punched his own bedroom door, pros- ecutor Ceri Murphy said. He then went to to

the room she had locked herself in. She heard a loud bang and her son forced en- try into the room, Ms Murphy said.

Dobbins, of Heathlands, Hen- goed, pleaded guilty to one count of criminal damage and a further charge of assault by throwing wa- ter.

He damaged a total of three in-

ternal doors at the property, Ms Murphy added. The value of the damage is esti- mated to be around £40. The court heard Dobbins re-

ceived a 14-week suspended sen- tence for a year for a common assault on a former partner in No- vember 2013. He also had offences on his re-

cord for criminal damage linked to domestic violence, the court was told. The case was adjourned for the

preparation of reports. The bench warned him “all op- tions” would be open, meaning he could face a custodial sentence. Newport magistrate Peter Wood

told him: “We are asking for a report from the probation on an all options open basis because of your previous record.” Dobbins was bailed on condition

he does not contact his mother and does not go to her address. The next hearing is to take place

at Newport Magistrates’ Court on March 18.
