Fishing guide Chad Johnson removes a streamer fly from a White River brown trout Steve Dally caught on a recent trip.
wintry White, a time of year that has historically been slow for trout fishing and area trout fishing guides. “We have clients who are coming
back every winter,” Dally said, “hoping to get that trophy fish.” One of Dally’s top guides, Chad
Johnson, is booked every day in February. In the past, winter months were lean times for guides. That business now is flowing into the community. Hotels and restaurants are seeing more winter visitors from the avid anglers. “We’ve kind of extended the season.
This is a great year-round fishery,” Dally says. After three hours of drifting and
casting, with Johnson manning the oars, Dally finally hooks a fish, about a 16-incher — not the trophy he hunts, but a beautiful brown trout, nonethe- less. He’ll be back, and so will his
clients. It sometimes takes a lifetime to bag a trophy.
Steve Dally casts an 8-inch streamer fly while fishing on a cold January morning. “It’s a game of a thousand casts,” he says.
