adequate time getting to know the different candidates. Meeting with the prospective employee also give districts
and companies the opportunity to try out new interviewing methods. Dave Mell, transportation principal for School Dis- trict No. 73 in Kamloops, B.C., brought to the district previous experience with a technique called behavior-based interview- ing when he came to work for the district. Before the interview, you decide what qualities you are looking for in a candidate and ask questions designed to uncover the candidate’s previ- ous work experience and how he or she has handled past job situations. It can be much more challenging for the candidate to re-count in detail actual actions and decisions and have an interviewer probe for reasons behind those decisions rather than answer some simple “yes” and “no” questions. “Tis type of interviewing is based on the concept that past
behavior is a good predictor of future performance,” said Mell. But, outsourcing can sometimes cut down on costs related
to repairs. For large repairs, such as replacing a diesel engine, Gary Martin sends his buses to a local mechanic. Performing the job in-house would tie up his bus bays, as well as his staff. “With each mechanic assigned approximately 43 buses, they
don’t have time to do major repairs in-house,” said Martin, transportation operations coordinator for St. Charles Parish Public Schools, Luling, La. ■

Transportation Planner
Mourned by Family and Friends After a feverish search for Tri-Board
Student Transportation Services Trans-
portation Planner Jessica Lloyd, the community of Belleville, Ontario, learned the tragic truth that Lloyd’s body had been found 11 days after she first went missing on Jan. 28. Lloyd is being remembered in her community as someone with an amaz-
ing personality and is being mourned by everyone she touched. “Jess was a fantastic person and she is greatly missed by the
whole staff,” said Steve Wowk, manager of Tri-Board Student Transportation Services. “Our condolences and our thoughts and prayers are going out to her family.” Lloyd’s last communication with anyone came in the form of
a text message at 10:36 p.m on Jan. 28. On Feb. 8, Ontario Pro- vincial Police charged Col. Russel Williams, a local Air Force base commander, with first-degree murder in the death of Lloyd and a second count of first-degree murder in the death of Marie Co- meau, a corporal at Williams’ base. ■
