and Transportation. As
the
Senior Counsel for the Consumer Protec- tion Subcommittee, he was the lead staff person for the oversight of NHTSA, the Federal Trade Commission and the Con- sumer Product Safety Commission. On the Commerce Committee, Strick-
land also advised Congress on safety reforms and funding increases for NHT- SA’s seat-belt and drunk-driving grant programs, and he received national rec- ognition from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, who named him Congressional Staffer of the Year in 2004.
STIMULUS FUNDS FOR CUMMINS, DAIMLER TRUCKS & NAVISTAR Of the total $187 million of stimulus
funds announced by U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu in January, nearly two thirds is going to three com- panies that are big players in the school bus manufacturing segment: Cummins, Daimler Trucks and Navistar. Te three companies won more than
$33 million dollars each to advance clean diesel engine, hybridization and electric vehicle technologies, a fact that insiders say is a very good sign for the industry. While the heavy-duty truck sector tends to receive the most attention from the federal government, any technological advancements have a way of quickly trick- ling down to the medium-duty, and hence school bus, market. While this most recent stimulus won’t
find its way to school buses specifically, the attention given to these manufactur- ers should not be lost in the conversation of how and why the feds are continuing to pump money into the economy, albeit ultimately taxpayer-funded relief.

OLYMPIC ACCOMPLISHMENT Chris Albrect, a driver trainer for Stu- dent Transportation
of Canada, gave
safety training presentations to bus drivers transporting athletes, officials, spectators, and media to and from all venues at last month’s 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
“Tis is such a wonderful opportunity. I
am very excited to be a part of the Olym- pic experience,” said Albrect. “As a trainer, I feel a great responsibility to accurately relay information so the drivers will feel empowered to do what they need to do when their training is complete.” ■
