Basingstoke is the gateway to Hampshire and the home of blue chip corporations. Karen Keeman asked three diff erent types of agents about their market activity.

THE AREA Basingstoke in North Hampshire is often mistaken for a New Town but is actually an old market town that was expanded in the 1960s to accommodate London overspill. It’s also known for its overenthusiastic use of the roundabout on its roads. Basingstoke is surrounded by an abundance of small picturesque Hampshire villages which benefi t from its services and transport links.
THE PROPERTIES The town of Basingstoke off ers a wide range of property styles and prices – catering for fi rst time buyers, families and the retired. Period property can be found in the town centre with Edwardian and Victorian terraced and semi-detached homes and outside the town centre there are lots of 1960’s homes. There are also some new developments that cater for the family market with townhouses proving most popular. The villages around Basingstoke off er a
variety homes in pretty, rural, locations, all of which benefi t from good access to London and the South Coast; London Waterloo is less than an hour away by train.
THE BUYERS The majority of buyers in Basingstoke are locals but there is still a movement of buyers from London looking to move to a more rural area. Investors are also attracted to the area because Basingstoke is an economic centre and is the location of the UK headquarters for some major fi rms such as Sony, Motorola, Sun Life Financial of Canada and The AA which draw in many young professionals who need rental accommodation.
