London to Paris Bike Ride 2011
Staff from across the group took on the ultimate cycling challenge and successfully completed the London to Paris Bike Ride!
Otherwise known as ‘The GMG Power of 10’, Beverley Szczech, Amy Tricklebank, Helen Warner, James Toogood, Ben Harding, Damian Haydon, Alasdair Swanson, Daniel Martin, Chris Wray and Ed Mardell all trained hard to ensure they were saddle ready for the event.
The group – unfortunately minus one member - set off from London very early on Friday 24th June and cycled through the picturesque Kent countryside before getting the ferry crossing into France and spending the night in Dieppe. The Saturday was spent cycling through historic towns and sleepy villages in Normandy before coming to rest in Gounay en Bray. On the Sunday, the group made their final descent into Paris before finishing at the city’s most famous landmark, the Eiffel Tower, late afternoon.
Organiser, Beverley Szczech Head of Residential Customer Experience commented: “ There were lots of hills, particularly through the Kent countryside, but lots of laughs too!
We saw some beautiful scenery, but nothing more beautiful than seeing the Eiffel Tower and knowing we had done it! This has really inspired me and I am already looking for my next challenge!”
London Marathon 2010
echnical Delivery and Russell King CFP Area Sales Manager took on the gruelling challenge of completing the London Marathon in 2010 - raising over £3,000 between them.
Steve Bottomley Head of Group T
Steve, who completed the race in a very respectable five hours and 44 minutes, said: “This has been the most gruelling task I have undertaken yet, but has also been the most incredible experience. I started training at the beginning of the year and took part in a series of half marathons in the run-up, but actually completing the London Marathon gives you an amazing sense of achievement.”
...it was an amazing feeling cycling up to the Eiffel Tower and it was a great team effort all round...
Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge 2010
As a keen cyclist, Chris Wray Residential Credit Controller took on the Coast to Coast Challenge, which is Britain’s most popular long distance cycle route; stretching 147 miles from Whitehaven in Cumbria on the west coast to Sunderland in Tyne and Wear on the east coast.
He said: “It was difficult to know what to expect of this trip, but I knew it would be a long ride, with big hills and there was no telling what the weather had in store! I had a fantastic trip and raised around £300. I am very proud of my achievement and would recommend it to any keen cyclist, especially if you are able to raise money for a worthwhile cause at the same time.”
Bath Half Marathon 2010
Beverley Dodd Residential Support Analyst ran the Bath Half Marathon in 2010 and raised over £300. Having run the 13.1 mile course in two hours and 39 minutes, she said: “Training started in earnest - slowly but surely, we extended our runs to eight/nine miles.
“I had to do a little power walking between mile nine or eleven, but I somehow acquired a second wind after that. The final mile was very kindly arranged up a slight incline, so that was hard going, but at the top of the hill, you can actually see the magical sight that was the finish line!”
Vertical Rush 2010
Former employees Laura Roberts and Amy O’Dwyer limbered up and successfully completed the aptly named Vertical Rush challenge. This involved running up 920 steps to the 42nd floor of the tallest tower in London, Tower 42, and Laura and Amy raised over £450 by taking part.
Russell, who stormed the course in three hours and 46 minutes, said: ” I had an amazing experience, met some fantastic people and even managed to raise some money for a great cause along the way. I would also like to personally thank the marshal who gave me direct encouragement 600 metres from the end and made me deliver the sprint finish I had promised myself!”
London Marathon 2011
Robert Bohen CFP Area Sales Manager completed the 2011 Marathon with a very commendable time of five hours and 21 minutes.
He said; “It was an amazing day
and I was overwhelmed by the people who turned out in their thousands to offer encouragement, as well as the sweets, cakes and other sugary goodies to give you that little boost just when you need it. I was also amazed by the sheer number of participants! What a feeling it was to cross the finish line! I went through many emotions throughout the day, but the one I remember most is the utter joy and relief I felt to have completed the marathon!”
