Sharon Corr
to walk away as my music had to come first and I’d created a lovely album and wanted to tour the world with it.
You’re a mother of two and a wife and yet you have a very successful and busy career. How do you manage to juggle it all, to live the dream? You make it look so easy? It is hard, it is hard; I’d be a complete liar to say it was like a bed of roses, honestly, it’s completely nuts. My main priority is that the children never feel like they are second to it, the important thing is that I can do what love, but that it doesn’t hurt them. It is a giant struggle and one of my great blessings is that I have a very strong husband who believes in my career and doing what I love and believes that it’s a very positive thing for the kids to see their mother doing something that she loves and them being part of it, having a strong career and doing what she wants and he does his best to facilitate that. That’s kind of how it works, but some days… some days we cross paths in the same airport and don’t even see each other [laughing]. But we do have great times together. We recently did some lovely gigs on the Costa Brava, the weather was gorgeous, we ate fabulous food and the kids stayed up late and hung out with the band until midnight! But then I have to get them back before the UK tour, so yeah, it’s completely bonkers!
Do the children understand your fame at all? It’s a funny thing, they’re starting to see that. My daughter will sometimes tell people [laughing] and I go, “Oh god no, Jesus that’s mortifying,” but before that, my children thought every mummy did this! Oh bless! Oh bless is right [laughing]. They now realise that mothers do other things, they don’t all go out and sing! It’s almost like they were institutionalised the poor things. They think it’s special, but as a woman I want to pass on to my daughter to never hold back on your dreams, to never fall into any stereotype that anyone designs for you, be what you want and go after what you want and look after yourself, be bold and be like a man if you feel like a man and be like a woman if you feel like a woman, we’re not so distinctly different. I have a ton of aggression and so does she, and I want my son to see women from a point of total equality. I’m not sure if that’s so relevant nowadays, but I think it is, as women are being much more objectified
now in the media, so for me it’s more important now than it’s ever been.
In addition to being very talented, The Corrs were also very famous for their beauty – and nothing has changed – what are your beauty secrets? Oh my god, thank you for saying that, I don’t know, I try to eat healthier, but I did drink a ton of beer last night and stuff a ton of chocolate down my face! [Laughing] But they’re remedies though aren’t they…[laughing] [laughing] You’re right they are after a long day! I believe in moderation, I don’t do as much exercise as I used to as I don’t have the time and if I go to the gym then I’m not with the kids, as I tour too much. The gym is healthy for your mind; a problem on your mind is halved when you come out of the gym! I eat a lot of fish, I try not to eat too much red meat, but I’m a total carnivore! [Laughing]. I do struggle to look pretty as I get older, that’s how it is [laughing], I get up at 7am and my face gets up at five in the afternoon – seriously, I delay my photo shoots until my face remembers where my head is!
When you do get time, how do you relax? I sat on the couch yesterday and read a book – I have to force myself to do that as my instinct is to keep going and then I find when I come off tour I crash and am ill as I’ve had so much adrenalin and a false ceiling! I know what you mean – happens to me every Christmas after deadlines! It’s very hard, but I’d like to be the type to do yoga, but I can’t stand it, it bores the pants off me! I run the opposite to what people would think was healthy! I like cooking and eating, so if I cook a nice meal and sit down with friends then I’m relaxing.
What can people expect on your tour? It’s a very dynamic show, without sounding too arrogant. It’s a really good gig, there’s a lot of great musicians with me, I’ll do some songs from The Corrs that I wrote and then strip things back to just me and the piano with songs from my new album, so a very diverse show. So hopefully they’ll enjoy something very real – and you must come and say hello, as this has been a lovely chat!
The Same Sun is out now!
