Feeling stressed? Not sure how to cope with it all?
W
e all have days when we feel overwhelmed. Here are some instant top tips from Cat
Williams, military wife, counsellor and author of ‘Stay Calm and Content No Matter What Life Throws at You’.
Watch your expectations: It is usually the feeling of not meeting our own expectations which causes us the most frustration. Let some things go, you can’t do it all and you need to be gentle on yourself, especially when you feel under pressure.
Prioritise: What is on your mind most at the moment? Can you do anything about it? If yes, do it first, if not put a mental "pin" in it
and decide when you will think about it next. Useless to worry about something out of our control it wastes precious energy.
“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference’.
Find somewhere to be alone: Even if it is in the loo for a few minutes. Lock the door and practice 'toilet seat therapy' which involves closing your eyes and imagining warm light pouring in and filling you up from head to toe so that all stress and self-doubt is replaced by
calmness and self-belief. You will leave only a couple of minutes later feeling calmer, happier, and much more able to cope. (Search You Tube for a demonstration by Cat and further details).
Talk to a friend or family member: We all need to off-load at times. Who do you feel most comfortable with? Share how you feel with them, they are also likely to feel the strain sometimes and will hopefully listen and support you.
