Live 24-Seven - Entertainment Bev Bevan's CD Picks of the Month:
Tears For Fears. The Hurting. (Universal) Rock/Pop duo, Tears For Fears, comprise Curt Smith on bass and vocals and Roland Orzabal on guitar, keyboards and vocals. Smith was born in Bath in 1961 and Orzabal in Portsmouth, the same year. They met, aged 13, whilst attending the same school in Bath. The band's name derives from Arthur Janov's book on primal therapy, Prisoners Of Pain. Tears For Fears became one of the most successful acts of the 80s and did well in America too. Their hit records include Shout, Everybody Wants To Rule The World and Sowing The Seeds Of Love. The Hurting was their debut album, originally released in 1983 and is now reissued in this double CD format, with added bonus tracks. It spawned the hits Mad World, Pale Shelter and The Hurting and went on to top the UK album charts.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Goin' Home. (Provogue) This is the latest release from five-time Grammy nominated American rock/blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd. His band is a veritable Who's Who in rock and blues music. In addition to long-time vocalist Noah Hunt, the line-up also includes drummer Chris Layton (ex Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble), bassist Tony Franklin (ex The Firm) and keyboardist Riley Osbourn (ex Willie Nelson Band). Goin' Home is an exploration of the influences of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and features guest performances from Eagle Joe Walsh and Beatle Ringo Starr, amongst others. Standout tracks are versions of Willie Dixon's I Live The Life I Love, Stevie Ray Vaughn's The House Is Rocking, Al Jackson's Breaking Up Somebody's Home, John Watson's Looking Back and William Bell and Booker T Jones' Born Under A Bad Sign which contains that classic lyric, "If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all!").The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band play the excellent Leamington Spa Assembly on November 1.
Elton John. The Million Dollar Piano DVD. (Eagle) Elton John's spectacular Million Dollar Piano show made its debut performance at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on September 8, 2011. Elton John was hardly a stranger to this venue, having already performed his previous show, The Red Piano, a staggering 243 times there. The date also marked his 40th anniversary since he first played in Las Vegas. Aside from his fine band (including long-time stalwarts Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on drums ),the other star of the show is the state-of-the-art Million Dollar Piano itself, which magically displays images to complement whichever song is being played. Those songs include classics such as Bennie And The Jets, Rocket Man, Tiny Dancer, Your Song, Blue Eyes, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Philadelphia Freedom, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me and I'm Still Standing. The first time I ever met Elton John was in 1966, as The Move were starting out and when he was the piano player in Long John Baldry's band ̶ hasn't the boy done well?!
Simply Red. Cuba. (Edsel) Manchester's most famous redhead, Mick Hucknall, formed Simply Red in 1985 and that same year the band notched up the first of many hits with a cover version of The Valentines' Money's Too Tight Too Mention. This very smart CD/DVD package, Cuba, was recorded live at El Gran Teatro in Havana, Cuba in 2005. In a nicely paced concert Mick Hucknall and Simply Red perform songs old and new, alongside native Cuban musicians, singers, dancers and a string section too. Favourite numbers performed include A Song For You, Your Mirror, Stars, For Your Babies, Home, Holding Back The Years, Sunrise, Perfect Love, Fairground ,Something Got Me Started and If You Don't Know Me By Now.
