ORCADIAN ENCOUNTER The Scottish Field feature on Orkney [A Light in the North, May 2013] encouraged us to visit this interesting and welcoming island. As we were awaiting a bus to the Italian Chapel I realised that we were standing next to local celebrity Cameron Stout who had featured in your article, just as if Scottish Field had arranged it. What a genuinely charming and friendly person he is and a

great ambassador for his community. We found Orkney to be just as he had described it and loved the scenery, the history, the food and the people. Thank you Scottish Field for raising our awareness of great

BURRELL IN BERWICK I read with interest your article on Sir William Burrell and his daughter [The Forgotten Daughter, June 2014]. The main part of his eclectic collection was of course left to the City
of Glasgow and is housed there in the purpose-built Burrell collection museum. He also gave a large part of his collection, mainly smaller items but including a Degas painting, to the Berwick-upon-Tweed museum, close to where he spent the latter part of his life. This is still housed in a dedicated gallery of the museum now housed in the town’s historic barracks. Well worth a visit , but check the opening hours. Andrew Ayre, Tweedmouth, Berwick-on-Tweed
LEARN FROM THE BEST Reading the interview with Nicola Benedetti [Blazing Fiddle, July 2014], I realised that she has become an icon in the field of music tuition in Scotland. Is it going to be by fee only in future, or will she be allowed to continue ‘free on demand’? Let’s hope her observations make their mark with the policy-makers.
Clearly, only a percentage of learners go on to succeed as full-time musicians and some would get there by sheer persistence, or parental support. But how many lives have been changed by an introduction to music? Nicola’s own experience and those of La Systema and the Raploch experiments are pretty good examples! Yes, I know she is the maestro of the violin concerto, celebrated worldwide, and that her music is in constant demand in my house as in millions of others. Her admission that she has long wanted to record an album of fiddle music came as a bit of a revelation – a fantastic revelation. I have been a fireside fiddler for about 70 years and I am one of thousands who can testify to just how brilliant a life-skill playing a musical instrument can be.
