EMPORIUM VisitAuchterarder The high street of this pretty Perthshire town is a shopper’s paradise A

ll eyes will be on Gleneagles this autumn when Europe and the United States face each other in the Ryder Cup, one of the most highly sought-after prizes

in golf. Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire will play host to the contest on 23-28 September and shopkeepers in the nearby town of Auchterarder are gearing up for the tournament. Several businesses in Auchterarder - known as the ‘Lang

Toon’ thanks to its mile-and-a-half long high street - are plan- ning to hold special late-night openings, giving visitors an extra chance to enjoy some retail therapy during the compe- tition. The majority of shops in the town are independently owned and run, offering visitors a unique shopping experi- ence in this friendly and welcoming community. The town is full of long-established businesses that

provide excellent customer service that cannot be matched. The vast array of shops offer a wide range of products that are unavailable elsewhere. Auchterarder’s central location - part way between Perth and Stirling - and its wide variety of shops make it a very desirable destination for customers. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee are all within easy reach. Most of the shops are located on the town’s long high

street, making them easily accessible, while its close prox- imity to the A9 and free parking with no time limits add to its appeal. Auchterarder Bloom Association also keeps the flower displays looking lovely, adding to the town’s attractions. More than 250,000 people from some 75 coun- tries are expected to visit Gleneagles during the Ryder Cup, which takes place every two years, with the competition being broadcast by 43 stations to 183 countries, making it one of the world’s largest sporting events. With so many visitors making their way to Perthshire, Auchterarder and its shops are ideally placed to serve customers in search of souvenirs of their stay in Scotland. Thanks to its central location, Auchterarder has also

been a popular base over the summer for people visiting the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, T in the Park at Balado in Kinross-shire and the Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe. Tourists are also attracted to the area by Innerpeffray Library, the first free public lending library in Scotland, and a host of Historic Scotland properties, includ- ing Tullibardine Chapel and St Serf ’s Church, which houses the 9th century Dupplin Cross.
