HOME & GARDEN
(although actually a conifer – not a pine) the Monkey Puzzle tree was declared a National Monument in Chile in 1990. I considered the notion of nam- ing our ‘national monument’, smashing the bubbly against its bark. But the truth is, I’m just too darn mean. Opening the tunnel turned out to be a joyous occasion. Sin- cere thanks to all the interested and knowledgeable readers, family, neighbours and valued others who turned out despite the rain, thunder and lightning. Daughter Phoebe, 17, pro- duced an exceptional Bakewell Tart. Sister and brother-in-law swooped in from Lincolnshire to pour endless cups of tea. Meanwhile, daughter Georgie, 12, baked an ingenious and delicious cake that touched my heart. It’s taken years of train- ing but they’ve all turned out fine.
In some shape or form, the polytunnel produce will be rep- resented at the forthcoming parish lunch, Kilmelford Village Hall on October 8 from noon. It’s a particularly jolly, fund-rais- ing event and excuse for a get together, where you will get a scrumptious lunch of home- made soup, well-filled rolls and a fine array of local crafts, plants, cakes, jams and chut- neys. Please come and buy a pot of my peach jam.
