Welcome to West Coast Review’s The Whisky Club. Each month we will sample a malt from the Oban Whis- ky and Fine Wines selection and share the opinions of a group of whisky enthusiasts: islander piper and whisky tasting champion Alasdair Murray; retailer Jenny Martin, who works in The Oban Whisky and Fine Wines Shop; local Highland games heavyweight competitor Craig Nicholson; and Euan Finlayson, a connoisseur of sin- gle malt whisky and manager of Oban Whisky and Fine Wines.

THE PIPER Alasdair Murray

A good whisky to have with your cereal in the morning instead of orange juice!

As soon as you get the dram you can smell fruit. It has an amazing fruitiness to it that I have never tasted in a whisky before. It has a very short after-taste making me want to take another swig - which could be danger- ous.

This month’s dram is the Benriach 15-year- old with a Madeira

wood finish Price: £50

I have tried the 12-year-old before and it was a strange combination, a heavily-peated Speyside, but a very nice dram as well and would take it before this one.

It would make an excellent dram for a hot summer’s day, or as a great introductory dram for someone who has never tried whisky before. For a 15-year-old it’s a good price, however I don’t think it’s a bottle I would want to buy my- self.
