Ultimate Canada Camps Written by: Danielle Fortin

The future of Ultimate in Canada is looking bright. To see this you need to look no further than the U17 and U23 camps hosted this summer by Ultimate Canada. Put on by some of Canada’s top players and coaches, the camps offered a development opportunity for players interested in improving their game and perhaps one day representing Canada on the world stage.

Players as young as eight years old attended the first ever U17 camp in Toronto, ON this May. The two- day camp covered basic offensive and defensive principles with a focus on throwing, cutting and person defense. After the first day of camp, several players had the pleasure of attending a Toronto RUSH game featuring two of the camp coaches!

The U23 camps, held in Vancouver and Ottawa, marked the official kickoff to the 2014-2015 U23 Team Canada program. The head coaches of the U23 teams, Tasia Balding (W), Patrick Mooney (O) and Dan Turcotte (M), worked alongside assistant coach

May 24/25 from 9:00am-3:00pm Sunnybrook Park - Toronto

In both cities, players showed extreme dedication and energy. The players at the Vancouver camp endured rain, wind, hail and thunderstorms over the course of the weekend. Unfortunately some of the out-of- town coaches failed to check the forecast and had to manage in shorts and thin jackets during the cold and wet weekend! Over the course of the two camps it was evident that the players enjoyed working with such a large group of talented coaches and appreciated the one-on-one feedback they received. They also enjoyed the opportunity to play with and against players from across Canada. We look forward to seeing everyone out at tryouts in September!

Looking ahead:

Ultimate Canada will continue to offer U20 and U23 Prospect Camps the summer prior to WFDF championships. Following our U20 camps last summer it is evident that these camps provide an important developmental opportunity for all players. They are also a great opportunity for coaches to gain additional experience working with players and a chance to work with other coaches. Keep an eye out for the U20 Prospects Camps in 2015.

applicants during the two two-day camps. Following the camps, the head coaches were able to reflect on their experiences working with the coaches prior to selecting their assistants. This shift in the coach selection process will hopefully create stronger partnerships between coaches as well as provide a coach development opportunity in the summer.

Ultimate Canada aims to one day see U17 camps hosted in each province/territory each and every summer. Going forward UC will work with partners across Canada to take steps towards making that happen.
