Worlds 2014 - Lecco TEAM CANADA JUNIOR W Written by: Kevin Underhill

Coming into the 2014 WJUC seeded third, the Canadian junior women were looking not only to break seed but also win the world title. TC cruised through pool play defeating Russia, Poland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, and Great Britain before moving onto a pivotal power pool matchup against Colombia. Canada defeated Colombia, the favoured number two seed in an epic come from behind win.

“Colombia came out strong loud and fast, and despite trading points initially Colombia took half 9-6,” said Team Canada starter, Vic McCann.

“In the second half Canada ramped up the energy to earn back their break points with crazy layout D’s and

beautifully executed plays. In the end Canada fought back to win 14-12 placing us as number one seed going into quarters.”

After a quarterfinal drubbing of Japan and a big win in the semis over Austria, TC was set up to play USA in the finals. The championship game, streamed on SkyD, was played in a packed Lecco stadium. Despite the weather conditions, both teams battled in the rain to the very end. USA defeated Canada 17-9. Canada broke seed and won a silver medal.

We can’t wait for WJUC 2016 and another shot at the gold. Team Canada is looking at a bright future.
