Canadian Ultimate Championships 2014

The CUC countdown is on! Written by: Andrew Portwine

With CUC 2014 just weeks away, activity is ramping up all over the country. Teams are in the midst of putting the final touches on their plays, planning their trip to Waterloo and maybe even packing their bags in anticipation of playing some big games.

We here in Waterloo are also bustling with activity. We have a staggering 7 local teams preparing to represent themselves in 6 divisions at a hometown CUC. We also have a dedicated group of organizers working hard to put the finishing touches on what should be a great tournament. I’m pleased to be able to share a few of the details with you during this article.

All games from Aug. 11 – 16 will be played at RIM Park in Waterloo. This single venue will offer turf and grass fields, a field side beer garden, VC Merchandise Tent, Massage/Medical service and food stations (both field food and meals). Just inside the main building are

snack kiosks, a sports bar and other player facilities such as change rooms and restrooms.

We’ve worked with the local public transit provider (Grand River Transit) to allow for player passes to give free access to public transit services. We strongly encourage players to take a few minutes and become familiar with the routes that run from their accommodations to the fields. We’ve strategically selected most partner hotels as they’re located on an express bus line that goes to the fields just as quickly as a shuttle! For more information, visit www.grt.ca

Everyone loves a good party, right? Pearl Nightclub will be hosting the junior and adult parties for CUC 2014. For the juniors, we’ve arranged access to the nightclub for our own exclusive party including laser light show and live DJ, but don’t worry chaperones; you can have dinner in the adjoining Flying Dog Restaurant.

The adult party will feature Happy Hour from 7-8pm (for those who like to party early!), Vodka Red Bull Lounge, photo booth, Ultimate themed drinks and a few other surprises in the works. Should you wish to catch up with friends without the nightclub feel, you’re welcome to enjoy drinks or a meal in the Flying Dog Restaurant throughout the evening.

The CUC website currently has all of the information you’ll need to plan your trip to Waterloo. More tournament specific information, such as field maps and schedules will be posted shortly. Please visit the website frequently as our staff are finalizing more and more details daily! (http://wp.canadianultimate.com/ cuc2014/)

We look forward to welcoming all of this year’s CUC players, volunteers, sponsors and dignitaries to Waterloo in just a few short weeks. Until then, keep your disc in the air.
