Canada’s longest Ultimate game

The fourth annual Art Hawkins Great Canadian Ultimate Game started in Yellowknife on Friday evening. It wound its way across the country and back to the west coast where the final point was caught in Victoria. The path even took a quick detour in the middle of the night to play a game in Dubai. Canadian and international players abroad met on the beach for an hour of sweltering Ultimate for the great cause. Dubai marks the first international community to join the AHGCUG and its success will likely pave the way for other ex-pat laden nations to join in.
After some unfortunate rainouts on the east coast, the game picked up steam as it headed west on Saturday. In seemingly Canadian fashion, most communities (except Dubai) battled through wet and cold conditions all day. Hour after hour, the scores and photos rolled in. Team red and team white battled it out across the country and team red finished with a one-point victory: 355-354.
The Art Hawkins Great Canadian Ultimate Game is, at the end of the day, a charity game to celebrate the game we love and to raise money for an awesome cause. The Edmonton Ultimate Players Association took their game to the next level with a great turnout and raised $2,200.00 for the cause.
The last donations are just rolling in now and a final tally will be made public soon. We’d like to thank everyone who participated and help organize. Without the overwhelming support of the Canadian Ultimate communities, events like this wouldn’t be possible. Hats off to all and looking forward to an amazing 2015 AHGCUG!
