Worlds 2014 - Lecco Written by: Kevin Underhill
Team Canada kicked off the tournament with a bang defeating Japan and New Zealand on day one. Despite wild weather conditions including lightning delays, the team found comfort on the field. They continued their dominance by defeating Netherlands. Ireland and Great Britain. Canada faced the USA in a crucial power pool matchup. The game was delayed over night with USA holding a 9-6 lead. When the team awoke in the morning, they learned that the result would stand. A bitter team Canada took down a feisty team France in the quarters and cruised past Germany in the semi finals setting up a rematch of the postponed game vs USA.
“After countless nights dreaming of playing USA in the finals the day was finally upon us, and if we didn’t have enough motivation already, watching the
Canadian ladies walk by after losing a tight game to the US in their own final gave us even more reason to go out on the field and give it our all, says Canadian d-liner, Trevor Knechtel.”
As if it were scripted, Canada won the World Championships on double game point avenging their power pool loss. Canada never trailed in the final game and looked in control the whole game. Standout TC veteran Hugh Knapp led a collected team that never showed panic. The Canadian gold medal ends a streak of four consecutive gold medals for the US. Trevor Knechtel had this to say following the final game, “It was a great day for us as individuals, as a team, as an organization and as a country.”
