A Newcomer’s Perspective

The passionate roars of over 1,000 Ultimate Frisbee players were heard echoing through the city of Montreal, when a new participation record was set at this year’s Jazz Tournament. On June 28th and 29th, one of summer’s sunniest weekends, teams gathered from Massachusetts, New York, Vermont and some of the near and far regions of Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia, to assemble at the Douglas Field and put their bodies to the ultimate test during two days of intense competition.

As a member of Domino, a women’s entry-level competitive team, and being at my first Jazz Tournament, I was looking forward to the challenge of competing against a variety of teams of different calibers, and my every expectation was met. Out of the 52 teams present, some competing at the national, recreational, and junior level, I’m proud to say that 24 of them were women’s. Also part of the tournament line-up was the National U19 Women’s and Open’s Junior Canada teams and eight other junior groups, aged 13-19. It was refreshing seeing such young and promising athletes taking part in the sport, and in my team’s case, beating us at it.

Upon our arrival at the field, we were immediately greeted by Cherry Bomb, a cheerful Montreal based mixed team, who volunteered to take charge of the coordination of the daily activities. Their duties included everything from directing teams to their respective playing fields, to manning the lunch and snack table, which is not an easy task when feeding a thousand hungry Frisbee players! The volunteers and organizers assured a smooth progression of the scheduled games and created an amicable environment that made everyone, experienced players and

Following an intense Saturday of Ultimate games, the majority of the players regrouped later that evening at the Percival-Molson stadium, to watch the Montreal Royal, the local professional men’s team, take on the DC Breeze. What better way to relax after a day of fierce competition then by casting aside all rivalries and banding together to cheer on the same team.

After a truly memorable weekend the tournament came to a close on Sunday afternoon. Each team we confronted had brought their A-game, the scores were often close and sometimes quite far apart, but each player gave it their all and all of us can say we were proud of our performance. In the end, we were happy to congratulate the winners of the women’s division, QUB from Québec City and the champions of the open’s division, Mephisto from Montreal.

If you didn’t get the chance to join us this year for a remarkable weekend of Ultimate Frisbee at the Jazz Tournament then I suggest you sign up next year! While visiting you could take a few extra days to make it a truly unforgettable experience by checking out the Montreal International Jazz Festival and all of the city’s cultural offerings. Until next year, practice, hydrate, and Frisbee on!
