News MUSEUM MODERNISATION

KUNSTEN, Museum of Modern Art, Denmark, is a white marble masterpiece. It is also the only museum outside of Finland to be designed by the world-renowned architect, Alvar Aalto. Today, the museum building is listed and is due to undergo a radical restoration and modernisation. The renovation will be carried out by Erik Møller Arkitekter, whose previous renovation projects include such famous Danish buildings as the Royal Danish Theatre and Amalienborg. The architects’ mission is to create a modern, highly efficient museum within the existing framework. The DKK 130 million project

will be closely scrutinised by the Danish Agency for Culture, who are responsible for the protection of the building. In addition to the extensive restoration of the building, a 600 m² exhibition space will be created in the museum’s basement. The architecture practice, Transform are in charge of the newly-constructed elements in the building together with Erik Møller Arkitekter. This extensive construction work began on 1st June, when the museum building closed to the public. While construction work is in progress, the museum will move to the city and travel around the country.

LOUIS KAHN EXHIBITON

Louis Kahn: The Power of Architecture, exhibition runs from 9th July – 12th October at the Design Museum.

IN THE NAVY

The Babcock Galleries at The National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard have opened to the public following a £4.5 million renovation led by architects Purcell and project managers Artelia. The Babcock Galleries are housed within an 18th century naval storehouse. Storehouse 10 is a Grade I listed brick and timber framed building. Before major works were carried out the brickwork was repaired and the timbers were stripped back. A new, single storey glazed link was conceived as a transition space between the two listed buildings.

Louis Kahn (1901-1974) was a visionary architect, an expert manipulator of form and light and a creator of uniquely dramatic buildings. Now, Kahn’s reputation is being redefined, as his search for an architecture that grows out of a sense of place seems more important than ever. An exhibition examining his singular career and diverse output opens 9th July at the Design Museum. Inspired by everything from ancient ruins to the work of Le Corbusier, Kahn’s modern buildings project an elemental, primitive power. He was a perfectionist and an artist, who also believed that architects have an important social responsibility. All of Kahn’s greatest buildings are extensively documented in this exhibition, including: The Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, designed to be ‘a facility worthy of a visit by Picasso’, and the Roosevelt Memorial, New York, which was posthumously completed in October 2012.

DESIGNING THE RIBA LOUNGE

The RIBA is launching an open call to find a practice that can transform an empty space into a vibrant architect-designed lounge and meeting space for the first MIPIM UK. This year will see the first MIPIM event come to the UK taking place at London’s Olympia from 15 – 17 October 2014. The RIBA plans to be highly visible at MIPIM UK, both promoting the

profession and our members, but also adding an architectural element to the show. RIBA London and RIBA Competitions together with Herman Miller and Reed Midem are launching an open call to find a practice that can transform an empty space into an exciting meeting venue with an architectural feel. This is a unique opportunity to develop an architectural installation and we are looking to select a creative and ingenious architect who can help us. The project is intended to be an opportunity for a

practice to showcase their creativity and architectural expertise to a unique audience of developers, local authorities, agents, investors and occupiers. This is primarily intended to be a publicity and marketing benefit for the selected practice, however a small fee of £5000 (including VAT) is payable to the practice to assist in the design and oversight of the temporary installation. A budget of £10,000 (including VAT) is available for the installation with furniture supplied from Herman Miller for the lounge space.
