POWER UP RIPON CATHEDRAL

For the past two years the Narthex entrance at Ripon Cathedral has seen nearly 200,000 visitors as well as regular worshippers pass through its automatic glass doors, which feature GEZE UK’s Slimdrive SL automatic operators. The brief was to create a welcoming new entrance that would transform the Cathedral, flooding it with light and allowing people to see directly inside. GEZE UK was commissioned by façade specialist DML to provide door operators for two single-leaf doors positioned either side of the lobby to complement the new porch’s elegant design, yet create a safe automatic entrance for a historic building with an extremely high level of footfall. With its exceptionally slim design and a drive unit height of just 7cm, the Slimdrive SL automatic sliding operator was the perfect solution for the job. Designed specifically for high volume traffic areas, the Slimdrive SL is especially suited to glass facades. It is powered by a DC motor, which is designed to ensure years of low wear and high performance. 01543 443000 | info.uk@geze.com | www.geze.co.uk

THE CUTTING EDGE

Cutting Technologies have used their skills to help create a stunning ceiling feature for a stylish hotel in Dubai after investing in new equipment worth £0.5million. The laser cutting and engraving specialists successfully produced intricate laser cut mild steel parts for the ornate five metre dome following investment in innovative technology. Cutting Technologies hold an established relationship with the designers and producers of the dramatic centerpiece, bespoke one-stop lighting service providers, Northern Lights. Previously, competition for mild steel jobs such as these could be hard, but investment in a new state of the art £500,000 Bystronic Bysprint Fiber Laser has speeded up Cutting Technologies’ production time and improved efficiency, leading to more competitive pricing. The new machine can also cut non-ferrous metals such as brass and copper much quicker and at a higher quality in a wider range of thicknesses. 01226 283322 | www.cut-tec.co.uk

DISCREET CABLES FOR DRAMATIC LOCATION

Foster Wilson Architects LLP recently project managed the refurbishment of a theatre where they were tasked with providing a discreet and practical method of housing multicore cables that ran from the stage to the control desk during music concerts. To accommodate the multicore cabling, two underground cable routes were cut into the floor. The cable routes needed to be covered with a lightweight, maintenance free cover that was readily removable by simple manual handling techniques, but also sufficiently strong enough to withstand imposed loads from mobile elevating working platforms (MEWP’s). Fibrelite supplied a bespoke encapsulating frame for both multicore cable routes along with a 1.5 tonne load rated trench cover to cover the cable trenches. The design was extremely challenging as not only did the cable trenches change in direction but they also changed in elevation. The Fibrelite cover incorporates an anti-slip material within the top treaded surface of the covers, which provides unparalleled anti-slip/skid properties for a composite cover. 01756 799773 | www.fibrelite.com
