OLIVER MARLOW, CO-FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR, TILT

Architecture and design in its purest sense has never been about creating something new, but more concerned with the transformation of existing precedent. We need to move towards a more varied design future in our cities, but the current problem, particularly in London, is that we have a market-led vision of the city. The outcome is an urban context that in no way reflects the rich diversity and multiculturalist spirit along with the site, history, time and place of its location. Looking back into history, this nuanced diversity in the built environment was everywhere. Leon Alberti Battista was amongst many other things an Italian architect, theorist and urban planner practicing in the early 16th Century. For Battista “the city is like a great house and the house in its turn a small city”. Previous generations understood that the city should be distinct to its place both visually and how it functions. What we have now is a universal standard of all these fundamentals: how buildings look, how big such rooms are and how materials are used. Many think that part of the problem is the changing pace of technology and its role in the city and buildings, this has played a huge role in the standardisation of the city. But creating good architecture has proven to be and will always be adaptive to technology. Look at how the classical palazzo works as a great retail space for Apple or how Tower Bridge is now
