News A THRIVING CENTRE FOR EDUCATION DIARY

13 – 21 September London Design Festival londondesignfestival.com VARIOUS LONDON LOCATIONS First staged in 2003, the London Design Festival is one of the world's most important annual design events. The Festival programme is made up of over 300 events and exhibitions staged by hundreds of partner organisations across the design spectrum and from around the world.

Pedder & Scampton have completed a new landmark building for national charity Thrive in Battersea Park, London. The new purpose-built training building will greatly enhance the activities of Thrive, a charity that has been working within Battersea Park for 25 years, teaching gardening and life skills (horticultural therapy) to those with learning, physical, sensory impairment and mental health disabilities. The design responds to a brief for a stronger visual identity for Thrive in the park, enhanced facilities that are economic and efficient to run, and excellent sustainability credentials. The distinctive design replaces a collection of

ramshackle huts and portacabins, and establishes a two-element building that curves to a radius centered on the large plane tree that dominates the site. The building has been positioned to maximise the benefit from solar gain, and incorporates a natural ventilation strategy, solar shading and rainwater harvesting. The design process involved considerable consultation with the user group, therapists, management, Trustees of the charity and the Local Authority. The resulting design features a number of intelligent interventions that ensure that the many different special needs of the users are met.

TRANSFORMING HEALTHCARE

Work has commenced on the site of the Institute of Translational Medicine Birmingham (ITM). The world-class clinical research facility, which will be located in the old Queen Elizabeth Hospital, next to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and the University of Birmingham Medical School, is designed by Glenn Howells Architects. The new ITM facility is a part of a hospital trust masterplan (also developed by Glenn Howells Architects) and will contain office space, laboratories and collaborative working areas, as well as a clinical trials facility. The building will retain its existing stripped-back Art Deco façade with the internal spaces reconfigured as four wings set around a newly in-filled courtyard. The project received planning permission in December and work commenced on site at the beginning of May and represents the first healthcare development for Glenn Howells Architects.
