is to be sure to send clear signals. It’s really easy for us to send mixed signals to our pets, saying one thing out loud but intuitively sending a picture of what we don’t want them to do (which is usually what we expect them to do). That’s why it’s critical to focus on what you want and expect your dog to do it.


I recommend that


to do that, you first stay calm. It’s easy to take it personally when our dogs don’t follow our commands and to get tense, but it is super important to stay calm so you can send clear signals. Next, focus on the positive, even visualizing what you want the dog to do. If you’re feeling especially frisky, send your dog a picture of what you want him to do. (It really works! Try it!)

than whatever else is holding his interest— whether it’s a squirrel, another dog, or the feeling of running loose.


When you celebrate and praise your dog each time he does what you ask, you gradually build your relationship to the point that your relationship is the best thing in the world and your dog will want to maintain that connection even more than he wants to chase a cat or eat your food off the kitchen counter. Try these tools next time your dog seems to have selective hearing and doesn’t do what you want him to do. By staying calm and positive and focusing on the rewards for your dog, you just might be surprised by how things change in your relationship! And don’t get discouraged if your first attempts aren’t stellar—it takes time to build mutual love, admiration, and respect. Just remember that each interaction is a building block for an even better relationship between you and your dog.
