Social housing firm to finish
development SOCIAL housing provider Gold- ing Homes has stepped in to fin- ish a part-developed housing site in Harrietsham. The housing association has bought the part-completed devel- opment site in Ashford Road from administrators after the former owners fell into financial diffi- culty.
Golding Homes intends to com-
plete the 10 three-bedroom homes and offer them for affordable rent to local people in need of housing. Maidstone Council granted planning permission for the de- velopment on a former car sales site in 2007. Developer Mr J Gavin, from Meopham, made the application via Mark Carter Ar- chitectural Design, Gillingham. Golding Homes’ director of de- velopment and regeneration, Chris Blundell, said: “This was a great opportunity for us to take over and complete a small devel- opment of homes on the edge of Harrietsham village. “Building work has been stalled
for quite a long time, but we are confident we can resurrect the site and new residents will be moving in by the end of the year”.

Council criticised over neighbourhood plan
DISAGREEMENT over Harriet- sham’s neighbourhood plan has led to a vote of no confidence in the parish council. The parish council believes its
draft neighbourhood plan provides valuable controls on development in the area, but Harrietsham Against Reckless Development has a 250-word petition disputing this. The group says the parish council
has failed to listen to concerns about over-development in the vil- lage, offering more land for hous- ing in the neighbourhood plan than Maidstone Council asked for. Campaigners called a public meeting in the school hall on May 22 and say all 43 villagers who at- tended gave a vote of no confidence in their parish council. A HARD spokesman said: “We reached this point only after spend- ing months trying to influence councillors, but they are simply set on their own course. “Our problem is that Maidstone
keeps telling us that they listen to our parish council and when we say that the council is not repre- senting our village, Maidstone says

we have to get it to change.” The HARD group says 77% of
those who responded to the coun- cil’s most recent consultation were opposed to the neighbourhood plan and, in particular, the inclu- sion of Tong’s Meadow and Court Lodge Road for development. But the parish council says its neighbourhood plan is “a cham- pion for localism” and, without it, development will happen anyway, but without any local input or gain. It believes development at Tong’s Meadow provides the best out-

come for expanding the school through a land swap, and some de- velopment on Court Lodge Road would yield a public open space, rather than just more homes. Astatement from the council said members were not made aware of the parish meeting, adding that while the vote of no confidence had been duly noted, 43 votes repre- sented 2% of the community. It added: “Having since checked
the HARD Facebook page, the meeting was not even advertised on there to inform residents. “HARDhas been stating that this
is the parish council’s neighbour- hood plan. However, it is the result of two years of consultation with parishioners.” The council says villagers will
have further opportunity to com- ment on the plan. “The borough council will hold a
six-week public consultation and, eventually, the plan will go to a local referendum where residents will have the chance to vote for or against the final neighbourhood plan.” The parish council was due to meet again aswewent to press.
